Music from the Holocaust

Long Island Philharmonic Arts-in-Education Program

Students will discover the power of the spirit over oppression as The Long Island Philharmonic String Quartet and Soprano perform music written inside Nazi concentration camps by Jewish composers, many of whom perished. This riveting middle/high school program teaches about censorship, propaganda, resistance and survival. Against a backdrop of Holocaust artwork and poetry, students will learn about the composers and their music, the artists and poets and their works, Terezín and the other camps - making connections to the contemporary issues of human rights and tolerance by studying music's role in this historic period.

A Musical Romp of Schoolhouse Humor…

Miss Nelson Has A Field Day

Miss Nelson, Viola Swamp and the children of Room 207 are at it again in this musical romp of schoolhouse humor, based on the book by Harry Allard. Everyone at Horace B. Smedley School is depressed. The school football team hasn’t won a game all year and the BIG game is approaching. After several attempts to change the team’s outlook, Miss Nelson calls in a secret weapon to whip the team into shape: the dreaded substitute teacher – Viola Swamp! The students soon learn that Viola Swamp has more than a few lessons to offer.

A Perfect Welcome to the World of Ballet…

The Nutcracker

New York Theatre Ballet, known for the company’s hour-long ballets for families, has been called “a miniature American treasure” (Dance Magazine). A magical “bite-sized” version of the perennial holiday classic, this “Nutcracker” is a perfect treat for young audiences. Though trimmed to one hour, nothing is missing – not a mouse, not a snowflake, not a dancing sugarplum! With traditional choreography, highly imaginative sets, sparkling costumes, stunning dancers, a corps of youngsters and a magical Nutcracker doll, this fanciful production is a perfect introduction to the enchanted worlds of “The Nutcracker” and the ballet.

The Hundred Dresses

An endearing tale based on the Newbery Honor Book by Eleanor Estes, this play focuses on the difficult issue of bullying and how mistreating someone because he or she is different from oneself brings as much harm to the bully as to the victim. As the story of Wanda Petronski, the new girl in Room 13, unfolds, her classmates learn the secret of the hundred dresses and with it, a lesson in tolerance, in taking responsibility and in living with the consequences of our actions.

A Powerful Episode in Black History…

Buffalo Soldiers

Based on the true story of our nation’s longest-surviving Buffalo Soldier and veteran of the Spanish-American War, this dramatic play with music tells the heroic story of the brave African-American soldiers of the 9th & 10th Cavalries, who served this country with little of the recognition they deserved. In 1996, this play was one of twelve selected as “Best American Plays for Young Audiences.”

Based on Arnold Lobel’s beloved characters in the FROG & TOAD series, this musical was a hit on Broadway and was nominated for three Tony Awards, including Best Musical. This all-new production remains true to the spirit of the original stories as it follows two great friends - the cheerful and popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad - through four seasons. Waking from hibernation in spring, they proceed through the year learning life lessons along the way, including an important one about friendship and rejoicing in what makes each of us different and special.”

Slam Poetry
Mayhem Poets

Using hip-hop rhythms and dynamic theatrical techniques, these hip, young “spoken word” poets bring poetry alive and get students thinking! Mayhem Poets’ performance poetry resonates with adolescents and teens, through real-life, accessible, rap-like messages. The show fosters an appreciation for both classical and contemporary poetry, while provoking thoughtful discussions and critical thinking on a wide variety of topics including diversity and acceptance. Mayhem Poets communicate to students important truths about “the power of words.”

Taylor 2 Modern
Dance Company

Taylor 2 was established to bring the work of renowned choreographer Paul Taylor to audiences all over the world, regardless of economic or technical limitations. Paul Taylor is a living legend in the world of one of America’s indigenous art forms – modern dance. In this program especially designed for students, young audiences will experience the magic of contemporary dance through performance, discussion and interaction between the artists and the audiences.
